General Guidelines for Supplying of Digital Artwork
In order to make the printing process as straightforward as possible we have compiled some general information that will enable you to send us exactly what we need to produce the printing you require. To avoid additional charges, please check that your disk conforms to the notes below before supplying data.
Acceptable Software
- The following programmes are preferred: Quark XPress 4.0/4.1/5.5/6.5, Illustrator 8.0/9.0/10.0/CS. Photoshop 5.0/6.0/7.0/CS, In Design 2.0/CS, . We will also accept Coral Draw saved as ai files and Freehand 8.0, Acrobat PDF on Mac or PC, though contact our Pre-Press Manager or Account Manager in advance to discuss. Artwork can be sent by Disk (CD) or E-mail
- All disks to be accompanied by a print directory of what is on the disk and a set of the latest updated lasers per page. Laser copy should be at 100% or clearly labeled otherwise.
- Please only supply the necessary files/artwork/fonts required for the document. Any extra material on the disk may cause confusion and additional cost in outputting.
- Small files upto 4MB can be sent by E-mail. Larger files can be burnt to CD and sent by post. They should be accompanied by a marked fax proof. Please note that these proofs cannot be accurately used to size.
- If no lasers are supplied with the disk we will output a set and fax to the customer who should sign off and return before we proceed.
Layout
- Please provide artwork in a one up basis, i.e. each individual page of a multi page brochure set onto separate pages in your layout software.
- All pictures, illustrations and logos must be updated to ‘OK’ on software applications used when supplying us with disks, so production do not find pics missing, or not updated. We will always output all screened data @175 lpi screen as our standard unless the substrate it is to be printed on will not print acceptably at that level. If you wish to output to a higher level of screen value please inform us, in writing, with each production that the higher level is required.
Scans, Images & Logos and Text
- Images should be provided, where possible, @ 300dpi (hi-res) for size and saved in CMYK format. EPS formats are preferred.
- Logos done in Illustrator should be in hi-res and saved as ai or eps format. If using Spot colours, then please specify the Pantone Colour reference, enabling us to accurately match to a required colour. Also making sure the text & logo has been outlined.
- Text for special matter pages can be supplied in Microsoft Word. If we have to convert from Word to Quark we must have a hard copy showing colour splits(if any), layout and pagination. Please do not send any logos embedded into the Word document because we are unable to access them. We do charge for converting documents.
Bleed
- Images, background colours and fills which are intended to extend to the edge of the page should be extended 3mm beyond the page to give a bleed. In order for correct positioning, also ensure that corner marks are in place to show cropping.
- All page layouts for the same job need to be exactly the same size so that automated imposition can be performed.
Colour
- Files created in PMS colours or pages and scans in RGB or JPEG must be converted to CMYK and uncompressed before supplying, otherwise it could delay the delivery of your production.
- Fifth or spot colours should be supplied as a separate proof attached to the composite proof.
- Should the job be in two colours, ensure any logos, illustrations, and pictures are coloured up in the two colours, with exactly the same colour name as the Illustrator or Quark Xpress document.
Fonts
- We house most of the popular Macintosh fonts, but please ensure that all Screen and Printer fonts within your artwork are supplied with the job. This also includes any fonts that may be used in EPS files. Where possible, convert any fonts in EPS files to paths or curves. This also applies to any artwork created in Corel Draw on the PC.
